There is expectation among
Colombians for the arrival of Encanto, a movie that promises to become an icon
of the good things in Colombia
Encanto, the Disney movie dedicated
to Colombia opens today Thursday, November 25, in the cinemas of the country.

According to Byron Howard, one of
the directors of “Encanto”, the animated Disney musical set in the
magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez was destined to be made in the
country.

That magic, along with
biodiversity, music and the different ethnic groups that inhabit Colombia,
among others, resulted in the perfect cocktail for Disney to choose the coffee
country five years ago as the ideal setting for the Madrigal family.
“I think there is something
in that narrative tradition that felt so organic that it was the optimal
combination for a Disney movie where magic is present. But it is not European
magic: it is magic linked to emotion and based on the experience of the real

Walt Disney Animation Studios and the first in the company’s long history to
focus, even a little, on Latin American culture (leaving aside the Pixar and
Disney movie Coco, based mainly in Mexico; and The follies of the emperor set
in Peru). On this, the executive producers of the movie Yvette Merino (Raya and
the last dragon) and the president of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Clark
Spencer (Lilo & Stitch, Zootopia), commented in an interview with La
Estrella de Panamá that the basis for making Charm a reality was “to show
the vulnerability of the family and the strength that is gained by forming a
home.”
With few trips to Colombia to get
to know its peoples and culture, Merino stressed that it was “a great
challenge to be able to show glimpses of the best things in Colombia in just 90
minutes.” “We want to show everything, but Colombia is so big, so
rich, that we couldn’t do it without having to sacrifice parts of the story,

Regarding the representation of
the Latino community in Disney productions, Merino noted that “it has been
